Turner, Victoria Practice Post

I was born and raised in Mobile, AL to a father serving in the US Navy and a homemaker. My father is originally from Pittsburgh, PA and is of Serbian and Polish Jew descent while my mother was raised by farmers in the small town of Greenville, AL and is Irish, German, and Native American. When I first attended college, I was offered a music scholarship at USA and obtained my BM in Vocal Performance in 2011. My main focal points in the first undergrad were opera and choral conducting. On my mother’s side, I am in the first woman to graduate from college and plan on being the first person to graduate with a Masters and Doctorate in my family. This past school year, I taught through Mobile Symphony Orchestra’s outreach program. Essentially, I was a traveling music teacher, grades K4-3rd, at four different schools in Mobile County. I fell in love with the students and decided to return to South for a second degree in Music Education so I can teach full time and share my passion with the next generation.

As a young teacher in this century, I believe our work in the classroom, regardless of grade level and subject area, should be to ensure the students are having fun while learning. Yes, it is very difficult, but comprehending a child’s attention span is fundamental when trying to instill in them the basics. Not being closed-minded towards various forms of teaching and constantly improving oneself would also assist. My main goal is to one day be a music professor of voice and choral conducting. I perform with Mobile Opera, Bella Voce (a women’s choir in Mobile), Musica Sacra (local chamber choir), and USA’s Chorale, Concert Choir, and Opera Theatre. This is a video of a performance I sang in with the University Chorale: South Alabama Chorale. Besides singing, I try to out-cook/bake my voice teacher and another music professor at South; however, they seem to beat me every time (I believe they cheat). Currently, I am training for a few 5Ks and one 10K in the fall for Breast and Ovarian Cancers. My mother is an Ovarian Cancer survivor, and I plan on helping charities regarding research of the disease.
